In October, 2004, we lost our daughter, Kalaiah to a rare type of cancer. We adopted Kalaiah from China in 2000 when she was 9 months old. We were fortunate to have her in our lives for 4 years before she lost her battle with NK Lymphoma. At Kalaiah’s funeral, we met Jeannie Butler, who started Annabelle’s Wish over 12 years ago. Annabelle’s Wish is an organization that works with orphanages in China. In our tragedy and heartbreak of losing Kalaiah, we found a way to invest ourselves in the lives of orphans while we were waiting to adopt again.
We had always planned on adopting to girls from China but we put our plans on hold while Kalaiah was in the hospital. After Kalaiah’s death, my wife and I started the paperwork in February 2005 to adopt again. While we were waiting, God surprised us with a son. We got our son, Zachary in November 2007. He had just turned 3 years old. He has been a blessing for us and all three of us waited for our adoption with China to finalize. On June 9, 2008 we received our daughter’s picture and referral from the CCAA in China. She was born in 2007 in the Guangxi Providence in southern China.
Since Zach’s adoption wasn’t final, he and I stayed at home and my wife bravely left for China on July 25, 2008 to pick up our daughter. My wife and Emily Aurora Li Ling arrived home safely on August 8, 2008 - the opening day of the Olympics in Beijing.
It has been amazing to see God’s hand at work in these two adoptions. Zachary and Emily are the best of friends. God was and is Always faithful and blessed us with a beautiful family.
